Eleemosynary Charity

Did you know that Grainthorpe has its own charity which has been in existence for 100s of years?

The Charity is a consolidation of 4 separate bequests made in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries for the benefit of the people of Grainthorpe.

Four landowners had each left land, the income from which was to be used to provide coal and clothing and other benefits to the poor of Grainthorpe.  They also provided the land for the school and a public reading room.

The Charity is still in existence today and provides a grant to pensioners, over 65, (1 per household) and widows at Christmas, to mothers of new babies and to the families of children moving from primary school to secondary school.  It may also be applied to for help in cases of hardship and can help towards fund raising for village institutions.

These grants are for the people of Grainthorpe and are not means tested.  If you have been a resident of Grainthorpe for one year or more then it is there for you.  It is one of the benefis of living in Grainthorpe.

If you qualify for any of the above and have not been approached by the charity please contact Jean West.
